Everything to Know About Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Laser hair removal treatments are one of the methods to remove hair permanently from any part of the body. According to a survey done by American Laser Centre, women spend around $10,000 more than men spend on shaving products. Hence, laser treatments are considered as the best option in terms of permanent hair removal. A laser session may cost around $429, depending on the body part one wants the process on.

1. What are laser hair removal treatments?
In this process, a laser beam is used to concentrate light on individual hair follicles, preventing the growth of body hair in that area. The highly concentrated light strikes the follicles, which are responsible for hair growth, under the skin. American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has declared laser hair removal treatments as one of the top five non-surgical procedures performed in the country. Laser treatment can be used on the face, legs, back, shoulders, arms, chest, bikini area, neck, upper lip, and chin.

2. Laser hair removal process, risks, and aftercare
Before the process begins, the dermatologist or their assistant cleanse the area to be treated. They will then apply a numbing gel on extra sensitive areas. The physician will cover your eyes with protective eyewear as it is mandatory in any laser process because the high energy light might damage your eyes. Once the numbing gel starts working, the process will start.

The physician then directs a laser beam at the treatment area. The bigger the area, the longer the duration of the treatment as the beam has to be concentrated on each follicle. If any follicle is left out, the hair growth will continue. Hence, smaller areas can be treated in a couple of minutes, while larger ones like the chest or leg can take more than an hour. During the process, you might feel itching or sunburn-like stings.

3. Risks involved in laser hair removal treatments
While laser hair removal treatments are quite safe, there can be some temporary side effects like swelling, redness, discomfort, and skin irritation. These gradually subside with the usage of medications and ointments prescribed by the doctor. If they persist, you must report to the doctor.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that one must only consult board-certified dermatologists to prevent any severe risks. If one goes to a non-certified physician, one might face side effects like scars, burns, blisters, infections, and permanent changes in skin color. Hence, it’s advisable to not get lured by discounted offers and to choose one’s consultant wisely.

4. Aftercare
One can resume one’s normal life immediately after the process. It is wise to apply sunscreen even after the process as it tests irritation. All hair follicles do not respond to laser beams at the same rate; therefore, you might see hair in the treated area within a period of two to eight weeks. For better results and complete satisfaction, one must complete three to eight sessions.

5. Points to be noted during preparation for laser treatments

  • It is prudent to stay away from the sun before the process
  • No waxing and plucking
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications
  • The process should be postponed if one has any sort of viral or bacterial infection.
